Downtown Mooresville's First Ten Days of October Run Through Deepwell's Bar

Downtown Mooresville's First Ten Days of October Run Through Deepwell's Bar

Deepwell opened on Wednesday, September 16, at 185 N. Main St. The night before it opened, the earliest open reservation for two that CharlotteFive could find was October 14 at 8:30 p.m. The restaurant also keeps a limited number of high-top tables and bar seats for walk-ins each night. Axios reported that the bar seats and walk-in tables are first-come, first-served, while the main dining room takes reservations. Downtown Mooresville also has four street events in the first ten days of October, and three of them land on nights Deepwell is open. If you live close enough to walk to North Main, those are the nights when getting a seat depends on timing instead of planning weeks ahead.

What Opened on North Main

Deepwell comes from chef Joe Kindred and Katy Kindred, the couple behind Michelin-recommended Kindred in Davidson, plus Hello, Sailor, Milkbread and Albertine. Its menu is a wood-fired steakhouse with New Orleans flavors. Starters include a smoky redfish dip with brown butter Saltines and NOLA BBQ shrimp with sourdough. Mains include Prime brisket with collard greens, Sea Island red peas and the couple's signature milk bread, a crispy NC flounder filet with peekytoe crab butter, and a long list of large-format steaks. Dessert includes a wood-fired milk bread with Cheerwine caramel sauce.

The building has a downtown history of its own. Iredell EDC identified the former tenant at 185 N. Main as JJ Wasabi's, the sushi restaurant. When the Kindreds announced the project in May, Joe Kindred described the Main Street space as a historic building with a layout similar to Kindred's. The plans called for about 4,000 square feet with a patio, an indoor-outdoor bar, a private dining room and a glass-enclosed room for curing and dry-aging. CharlotteFive suggested the name is likely a nod to Deep Well, the early community named for a large natural well in the area. A 2019 Lake Norman Publications history piece traces the name to that same well.

Timing matters too. Kindred in Davidson has been closed since a small fire nearly five months ago, and its owners announced that reservations open again starting October 20. That makes Deepwell the only Kindred dining room serving dinner in the Lake Norman area for its first five weeks.

The Hours Decide Which Event Nights Work

Deepwell serves dinner Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 9, Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10, and Sunday from 5 to 9. It's closed Monday and Tuesday. Here's how that schedule lines up with downtown's early-October calendar.

Date Event Event hours Street closure starts Deepwell open that night?
Sat., Oct. 3 Downtown Mooresville Festival of Food Trucks 5 to 8:30 p.m. 3 p.m. Yes, 5 to 10
Tue., Oct. 6 Mooresville Motorsports Celebration 4 to 7 p.m. 2:30 p.m. No
Fri., Oct. 9 Downtown Arts & Acoustics 6 to 9 p.m. Not listed Yes, 5 to 10
Sat., Oct. 10 On Tap Oktoberfest Noon to 9 p.m. 10 a.m. Yes, 5 to 10

Two Saturdays and a Friday line up. Tuesday doesn't, which makes the Motorsports Celebration the one early-October event night when North Main's best-known new dining room is dark.

Saturday, October 3: The Trucks Start When the Doors Open

The Festival of Food Trucks brings more than 15 trucks and live music to Broad and Main Streets from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The town calendar lists the street closure starting at 3 p.m. Deepwell opens at 5, the same hour the trucks start serving. If you're hoping for a bar seat, getting there right at opening puts you ahead of the evening crowd. If the bar is already full, you're standing in the middle of a food truck festival.

Tuesday, October 6: The Night Main Street Belongs to Racing

The Mooresville Motorsports Celebration is free and runs from 4 to 7 p.m. on Main Street. It's put on by the Town of Mooresville, the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame and Visit Mooresville, with race-themed activities, food trucks and a classic car show. At 5 p.m., NASCAR Hall of Famers Dale Jarrett and Ron Hornaday Jr. will be inducted into the Hall's Walk of Fame. Jarrett is a 1999 Cup Series champion and three-time Daytona 500 winner. Hornaday holds the record for the most Truck Series championships, with four.

The street closes at 2:30 p.m. that day, earlier than for any other weekday event in the stretch. Dinner that night comes from the food trucks, since Deepwell is closed on Tuesdays.

Friday, October 9: An Hour Before the Music Starts

Downtown Arts & Acoustics runs from 6 to 9 p.m., with live music, artists set up in downtown businesses, shopping, and specials. Admission is free. The Mooresville Downtown Commission presents it with Mooresville Arts, 158 on Main and Waves Entertainment. As of this writing, the commission hasn't posted a list of participating businesses or Sip & Shop details.

This is the night with the most room in the schedule. Deepwell opens at 5, an hour before the music starts, and stays open until 10, an hour after it ends. A walk-in seat at the bar fits on either side of the event.

Two newer tasting and retail stops sit a short walk up and down the block. Stardust Cellars opened its mead and wine tasting room at 228 N. Main St. with a grand opening on March 21. Gingered Home & Holiday, the rebranded Gingered Farmhouse, is now at 142 N. Main St. Both are on the same stretch of Main as Deepwell's front door.

Saturday, October 10: Oktoberfest Hands Off to Dinner

On Tap's downtown Oktoberfest begins at noon. The headline event is the sixth annual Bags & Brats Cornhole Tournament, a fundraiser for Lake Norman Humane. It starts with round-robin play and finishes with a championship bracket. Singles and teams of two can register online, and registration includes a free T-shirt. The day also includes live music, seasonal brews, pet adoptions and the annual stein-hoisting competition. Lake Norman Humane's listing calls this the ninth annual Oktoberfest at On Tap Crafty Brews and runs it until 9 p.m.

One change this year is the Brat Trot 5K, which has been replaced by cornhole. The On Tap crew is planning a three-mile benefit run for St. Patrick's Day weekend in March 2027.

The street closes at 10 a.m. Oktoberfest and Deepwell overlap from 5 to 9 p.m. That leaves a full afternoon of cornhole and steins before the bar seats open up the block.

How to Plan a Walk-In Night

Each of the three open nights calls for slightly different timing. Here's how to approach it:

  1. Arrive close to 5 p.m. CharlotteFive described the walk-in seating as limited every night, and that matters most on nights when the street is already full.
  2. Check Resy anyway. The reservation snapshots shifted overnight. On Tuesday night, CharlotteFive's feature showed October 14 as the first opening. By Wednesday morning, opening day, its newsletter showed October 10 at 9:30 p.m. available. Cancellations open up seats, and the snapshot from opening week is weeks old now.
  3. Plan around the street closure time. It's 3 p.m. on October 3 and 10 a.m. on October 10. If you're driving downtown, those are the times that affect where you can park and which streets you can use.
  4. Keep a second stop in mind. Crave Cookies opened its first Carolina location on February 21 at 201 N. Church St., Suite 103, a short walk from Main. Owner Macie Mincey said the activity around North Church Street and Liberty Park helped shape her choice of location.

After October 10

The month's street calendar moves away from Main after that weekend. Liberty Park hosts a free outdoor screening of Hocus Pocus on Friday, October 23, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Downtown Mooresville's Halloween Candy Grab is Friday, October 30, from 3 to 5 p.m. sharp.

Kindred in Davidson starts taking reservations again on October 20, so Deepwell won't be the only Kindred table in the area for long. Construction also continues a few blocks east on East Center Avenue. The town's stormwater and greenway project there will add bike lanes and a pedestrian connection from Elm Street to Willow Valley Park, with a crosswalk linking to the Liberty Park greenway. The town expects the work to finish at the end of 2026. If you're planning a walk-in night at Deepwell, the dates to circle are Saturday, October 3, Friday, October 9, and Saturday, October 10, each starting at 5 p.m.
